Is it really possible to brew gluten-free beer at home? Yes! In fact, the current issue of Gluten-Free Living (2/2009) magazine features an article entitled "Basement Brew - How to Make Homemade GF Beer." In this article, Harold Rothwell, a beer-loving gentleman with Celiac disease, shares his gluten-free home brewing experiences - both good and bad.
Mr. Rothwell also shares a recipe for gluten-free beer using home-malted buckwheat and brown rice syrup. The article also features a list of popular commercial gluten-free beers including Bard's Beer, Green's, Red Bridge and New Grist with information on ingredients used in each product, distribution availability and what each brew tastes like.
If you are interested in making gluten-free beer at home, check out the current issue of Gluten-Free Living to learn more. The science and art of home brewing does require a degree of time commitment. You need to learn how to malt your own grains, choose appropriate good quality gluten-free ingredients and make an investment in, at minimum, basic brewing and bottling equipment. It sounds like a great hobby for those ready to make the commitment!
